Midfielder Mousa Dembele could be handed his Tottenham debut as Andre Villas-Boas looks to record his first win of the season against Norwich at White Hart Lane.
Younes Kaboul, Scott Parker, Giovani Dos Santos and Heurelho Gomes are all unavailable.
Norwich, meanwhile, will be without Simon Lappin, who has an ankle ligament injury picked up in the midweek Capital One Cup victory against Scunthorpe.
Lappin will be out of action for three weeks, while fellow midfielder Robert Snodgrass trained on Thursday after suffering a minor leg injury last weekend and should be fit.
Goalkeeper Mark Bunn will not make the trip after signing from Blackburn but holding midfielder Alex Tettey, signed from Rennes, could feature from the bench.
Match Notes
The season starts here for Tottenham after a hectic week's work in the transfer window as Andre Villas-Boas moved fast to reshape a squad who took just one point from their first two matches.
No slip-ups will be expected at their third attempt, against a Norwich side whose last visit to London ended in a 5-0 opening-day drubbing at Fulham.
Norwich won well at White Hart Lane last Easter but are probably revisiting at just the wrong moment.

REVIEW
On Friday
night, Champions League winners Chelsea and Europa League holders
Atletico Madrid meet in Monaco to officially get the European season
underway.
i'll tells you everything you need to know about the Super Cup.
How did this Super Cup come about then?
For Chelsea,
summer signing Eden Hazard has already illuminated the Premier League. In his
first three league matches following a £32m transfer, he has scored once and
set up five more goals as the Blues top the early table.
He started like a
house on fire against Wigan on the opening weekend, playing the perfect ball
through to Branislav Ivanovic to score after two minutes and then winning a
penalty shortly afterwards.
Hazard was again
influential in the midweek 4-2 win over Reading and he opened his scoring
account from the penalty spot against Newcastle on Saturday.
The man in charge
at Atletico is a certain Diego Simeone – yes, the man who got David Beckham
sent off at the 1998 World Cup. He replaced Gregorio Manzano in December of
last year and guided them to a fifth place finish and a chance to defend their
Europa League title.
Simeone had two
spells at the Vicente Calderon as a player, between 1994 and 1997 when he made
98 league appearances and also between 2003 and 2005 when he played 36 games.
And
he was certainly bullish in Thursday's press conference, saying his
team would give 'sweat, heart and tears' despite it essentially being a
glorified friendly.
After missing out
on Champions League football by just a couple of points last season, Atletico
will be targeting the top four this season and will believe they have the squad
to cope with the demands of juggling league and European commitments.
Atletico’s
obvious star is Falcao, the Colombian striker who scored 12 times in the Europa
League last season, including two in the final against Bilbao, and 36 in all
competitions. Not a bad return for his first season in Spain after a big money move
from Porto.
He’s already been
dishing out more punishment for the Basque side this season, netting a
hat-trick in a 4-0 win on Monday night, and looks likely to match, or even
exceed, his tally from last year.
Chelsea have
started the season brilliantly and top the embryonic Premier League table,
albeit having played a game more because their game with Reading was brought
forward from this weekend.
After losing the
Community Shield against Manchester City, they started off with a 2-0 win at
Wigan, settling the game in the first seven minutes through Ivanovic
and a Frank Lampard penalty.
The home
encounter with Reading came with a scare as the visitors had a 2-1 lead with 20
minutes remaining. But Chelsea rallied and goals from Gary Cahill, Fernando
Torres (from an offside position) and Ivanovic pulled it round.
Tip top form: Fernando Torres has made a great start to the season and scored against Reading
And they looked
even better in the 2-0 win against Newcastle on Saturday, as Torres produced an
attacking masterclass – first winning a penalty for Hazard to convert and then
scoring himself just before half-time.
Atletico have
four points from their opening two La Liga matches: a draw at Levante earned
through an Arda Turan goal and a superb 4-0 home win over Bilbao in which a
Falcao hat-trick was capped off by Tiago’s fourth.
Solid start: Atletico have taken four points from their first two matches in the La Liga season
Have the teams ever met before?
Chelsea and Atletico were drawn together in the group stage during the Champions League of 2009-2010.
The
match in Madrid was pretty dramatic, with Chelsea falling behind to
Sergio Aguero's goal only for a Didier Drogba double, including one
with two minutes left, seemingly turning the game round. However, an
Aguero equaliser earned Atletico a point in injury time.
Chelsea
made no mistake at Stamford Bridge, cruising to a 4-0 success thanks to
goals from Salomon Kalou (2), Frank Lampard and a late own goal.
So what's going to happen then?
Both
sides have started the season well and possess abundant attacking
options, so hopefully we'll see an open game and an entertaining
spectacle.
Chelsea should have enough to win the game but it could be close, perhaps a 2-1 win.

REVIEW
Tonight's episode of Awkward already scores points with me, based on its title alone. "Pick Me, Choose Me, Love Me" may have more to do with Jake and/or Matty wanting Jenna's affection, but those of us who've seen Grey's Anatomy likely recognize those words as part of Meredith's plea for Derek to choose her over Addison. I guess this makes me Team Mattison!
Season 2 of Awkward hasn't been so awkward for Jenna on the social front, but after yet another recent brush with death, which was once again mistakenly perceived as a suicide attempt, not to mention her blog going public, Jenna seems to be in the public eye again. In the clip below, from tonight's episode, she's trying to hide under her hoodie. But she can't escape a run-in with the Julie's. And they have opinions on everything…
Like I said, I'm Team Matty, even though I'm probably too old to be on a team to begin with. But I think anyone from Team Jordan Catalano might be grandfathered into Team Matty's roster. Would that make Jake the Brian Krakow of this show? He's nice, innocent and hopelessly in love with a girl who prefers the attention of a guy who doesn't always appreciate her… So, kind of. Now that I've thoroughly dated myself…

FC Barcelona look to win their first title of the 2012-13 season as they head to the Santiago Bernabeu and take on Real Madrid.Tito Vilanova's men come into this game off a comeback victory against Osasuna on Sunday. Lionel Messi did not have the best game in Pamplona, but Leo was able to bring his team back with two goals within a four minute span to get the three points.
Real Madrid come into the second leg of this Supercopa as a team looking to get it together. After their 2-3 loss in the first leg, Jose Mourinho's team went to Getafe and were unable to put them away. Getafe stunned Real Madrid with a 2-1 victory, leaving Los Blancos with just one point after two rounds in La Liga.Barcelona are now up "una manito" (five) points up on Real in La Liga.
Cristiano Ronaldo will look to lead his team to their first win of the 2012-13 competitive season as they host Messi and Barcelona on Wednesday.A 1-0 or greater win and Real Madrid hoist the trophy in front of their fans.A Barcelona win or tie of any kind and Barcelona gets to celebrate in the Bernabeu.Instead of predicting some safe score of 2-2, I decided to go out and give six bold predictions for this game. You may—and probably won't—agree with what I say, but hey, it's time to mix things up a bit.

Liverpool were dismantled by West Brom; will the Premier League champions take advantage of the disarray at Anfield?
Manchester City almost suffered an upset last weekend and they were lucky to escape the Etihad with 3-2 win over Southampton, courtesy of a late Samir Nasri strike. Despite the three points, Roberto Mancini will be looking to rectify the shaky defence which almost cost them the game.
At the Hawthorns Liverpool did suffer an upset, when West Brom displayed the clinical finishing that evaded Luis Suarez; the Reds had 16 attempts at goal but only two were on target.
The red card shown to Daniel Agger was the catalyst for their collapse and they will have to do without their Danish defender against City. If Jamie Carragher is to partner Martin Skrtel then the form he showed against Hearts midweek will be a worry; the mistakes he made, such as a couple of shaky back passes, are exactly the type of errors City will look to pounce upon. Suarez and Borini, who couldn’t find the back of the net in the Europa League qualifier, will be desperate to get on the scoreboard in this tie.
The injury sustained by Sergio Aguero may prove to be an early problem for City’s strike force, but with the likes of Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli, they have plenty of cover for the Argentinian. It may also come as a boost to City to know that Liverpool have only managed to garner 18 points from their 20 Premier League matches in 2012.
Line-ups from;
Liverpool (from): Reina, Kelly, Johnson, Skrtel, Carragher, Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, Downing, Suarez, Borini, Jones, Coates, Enrique, Henderson, Shelvey, Spearing, Adam, Sterling, Carroll.
Man City (from): Hart, Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, K Toure, Savic, Clichy, Kolarov, Nasri, Milner, Johnson, Y Toure, De Jong, Rodwell, Silva, Tevez, Balotelli, Dzeko.

Arsenal’s Premier League campaign got off to a stuttering start last weekend as Arsene Wenger’s side were held to a goalless home draw against Sunderland, and the Gunners will be desperate to get their first goals – and victory of the campaign when they visit Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium on Sunday.
Stoke, too, were held on the opening day of the new season by Premier League new boys Reading, and Tony Pulis will be hoping that home comforts will be the key to his side taking their first three points of the season against the visitors from north London.
Britannia Stadium has not been an especially happy hunting ground for Arsenal in recent seasons and, in fact, the Gunners have won just one of the last four meetings between the sides when the Potters have had home advantage.
evertheless, Paddy Power make the visitors their even money (2.0) favourites to pick up the win on Sunday with Stoke available at 11/4 (3.75) with the same firm to grab victory in their maiden home fixture of the season. Draw backers may be tempted by the 12/5 (3.40) quote offered by the Irish odds compiler.
Arsenal may have drawn a blank last week but five of the last six meetings between these two sides has seen both sides hit the target and the 8/11 (1.73) for both teams to score again here cannot be ignored.
Tony Pulis will be hoping that the physical presence of striker Peter Crouch will help to unsettle the Arsenal defence, and the former Tottenham Hotspur striker is chalked up at 7/1 (8.0) with Paddy Power to open his account for the season with the first goal here, while likely strike partner Jonathan Walters can be backed at 8/1 (9.0) to break the deadlock.
Arsenal’s attack is likely to be led by Germany international Lukas Podolski, and the man who joined the Gunners from Koln in the summer is chalked up at 11/2 (6.50) with Paddy Power to bag the opener.
Santi Cazorla, who enjoyed an impressive debut against Sunderland for Arsene Wenger’s side, is chalked up at a hugely appealing 8/1 (9.0) with the same firm to open the scoring here.Four of the last six meetings between the sides have produced a 3-1 scoreline and, with that in mind, the 11/10 (2.10) on offer with Paddy Power for more than three goals to be scored here is outstanding value and should be snapped up.

UPDATE MANUTD 0 -1 FULLHAM!! LOL
REVIEW
Manchester United make their 2012/13 season Old Trafford debut on Saturday afternoon when they host Fulham FC for a Premier League contest. The two sides clashed twice last season in league matches: this same fixture last season resulted in United trashing the Cottagers 5-0 at Craven Cottage just prior to Christmas and during the reverse fixture at the 'Theatre of Dreams' in March, a Wayne Rooney goal was enough for the Red Devils to earn all three points.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Form Guide: Sir Alex Ferguson's side is currently 15th in the table after their 0-1 defeat by Marouane Fellaini Everton FC on Monday at Goodison Park. Club in crisis!!! Don't worry, Liverpool is currently 18th in the table so they'll surely be relegated this season.
Team News: Almost of United's injury concerns occur at one positon: center-back. Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, and Chris Smalling have all been ruled out for this match. Darren Fletcher is unlikely to be available as well due to his bowel condition. (Manchester United Team News Report)
FULHAM
Form Guide: If Clint Dempsey's desire to be sold is denied, at least he may still get the Champions League football he so badly craves. Martin Jol's side are currently 2nd in the table and with a game in hand on Chelsea! The opening weekend saw Fulham thrash Norwich City by a 5-0 scoreline.Team News: Kerim Frei and Philippe Senderos are unavailable as is Dempsey due to his transfer saga. Simon Davies is a doubt as well.
-----
What approach will Fulham take?: Jol has received praise for Fulham's attacking ways. However, when his side arrived at Old Trafford in March, they continually defended deep and in two narrow and compact banks of four. This left them with few genuine attacking opportunities but the tactics certainly frustrated United. Here's a quote from Sir Alex after that match:
Jol could be looking to change up his approach a bit
though because his squad may be full of confidence after their
impressive five-goal performance versus Norwich City and also because
it's possible that he feels United is vulnerable in the back right now.
Petric appears to be a strong enough center-forward but if Ruiz tries
to occupy Vidic so that the new Croatian signing can be isolated on
Carrick -- or whoever else partners Vida -- he certainly isn't the same
sort of physical presence that Marouane Fellaini was last week.
Nonetheless, Jol could decide to take a proactive approach if he
perceives weakness and this could result in an extremely open match. If
Fulham decide to defend deep again though, then Paul Scholes' ability
to quickly change the point of attack with long-arrowed passes from
deep and United playing with width on at least one side will be key
factors in attempting to loosen a tight defense.
* What will United's front four look like?: With only one match per week at this point of the season and with a plethora of attacking options, who will Fergie select? No matter who is selected, there are two keys that could help United create chances: (1) Playing with more width -- or perhaps with more effective width -- than they did last weekend and (2) fluid movement in the front four. On the latter, when United bagged five goals versus Fulham last December, Ryan Giggs -- who was in central-midfield that day -- had this to say after that impressive attacking performance:

UPDATE now is 1- 0
REVIEW
The Blues have started the season with style and efficiency, beating Wigan 2-0 away from home and then putting four past newly promoted Reading in an eventful 4-2 victory in West London.
While Roberto Di Matteo’s men have looked fluid and dangerous in attack courtesy of new signing Eden Hazard and a rejuvenated Fernando Torres; they will need to be wary of defensive frailties which caused them to ship two unnecessary goals against Reading.
Newcastle showed in last season’s installation of this fixture that they have the men to exploit any kind of defensive frailty; having beaten the home team 2-1 in a thriller that will always be remembered for Papiss Cisse’s wonder goals.
Cisse’s partner in crime Demba Ba will be looking to score in successive games (providing he recovers from a minor shin injury) following his curled strike against Tottenham in Newcastle’s opener, from which they took all 3 points courtesy of a 2-1 scoreline.
It promises to be an intriguing game between two sides which have a 100% record so far this season, a record which is certain to change come Saturday night as both teams aim to get out of the blocks as quickly as possible.
Chelsea’s Main Man: Eden Hazard
The headline signing of the summer has made a great start to life in the Premier league with the young Belgian racking up a stunning record of 5 assists in 2 league games thus far.
Hazard will certainly try to pull the strings for Chelsea from midfield and Fernando Torres can look forward to decent service from the attacking midfielder who always seems to find the killer pass for his strikers.
He has been instrumental to Chelsea’s good early run of results so far and Chelsea fans will be hoping he keeps up his impressive form to give them the best chance of a result against Newcastle.
Newcastle’s Main Man: Papiss Cisse
Already recognised as a prolific Premier League striker after less than a year of playing in England; Papiss Cisse has proved to be one of the most inspired signings of the Premier League era, boasting a goals to games ratio few strikers can match.
The Senegalese hitman scored one of the best goals in the history of English football on his last visit to Stamford Bridge, and he will provide a threat to the Chelsea defence with his lethal finishing and pace.
He will be looking to get off the mark for this season against Chelsea after failing to find the net against Tottenham. His link up play with Demba Ba will be crucial to Newcastle’s chances of gaining 3 points against Chelsea.
Chelsea Team News:
Gary Cahill will likely retain his place in the starting line-up following his goalscoring display against Reading in place of the injured David Luiz.
Ramires has apparently recovered from an illness which kept him out of the opener against Wigan, so he too will keep his place in the starting eleven.
There is worse news however for Marko Marin, as Chelsea’s summer signing from Werder Bremen is still nursing a hamstring injury and is expected to return after the international break.
Newcastle Team News:
Demba Ba and skipper Fabricio Coloccini are doubts but could yet make the starting line-up come kick off.
Alan Pardew left the duo out of the midweek Europa League tie in Greece due to the pair having a shin and thigh problem respectively.
There are encouraging signs as both trained in London ahead of the game successfully, Cheick Tiote (calf) and Shola Ameobi (hamstring) look sure to miss out however.

The stage is set for one of the most awaited fixtures in La Liga. Barcelona will be taking on their arch-rivals, Real Madrid.
La Blaugrana fans would be eager to see how their new coach, Tito Vilanova, performs against Real Madrid; as Josep Guardiola was able to impress almost every time Barcelona faced Los Blancos during his era.
The first leg of the two-legged tie will take place at the Nou Camp, and Vilanova is going to try and take the home advantage with the stadium fully packed with Les Cules.
On the other hand, Jose Mourinho can boast about the Spanish La Liga win which he managed to pick up last season. And in the second leg of the domestic league, Madrid were able to win against Barcelona, and that too at their home stadium, the Nou Camp.
Now, the two rival clubs are going to face each other in the Supercopa de Espana, and anything can be expected from the much-anticipated fixture.
Team News: BarcelonaThe hosts are currently in extraordinary form. Not only have they managed to win each and every pre-season game; in fact, they also won their first La Liga game emphatically. The Catalan giants were able to tear apart their first opposition, Real Sociedad, with the final score of 5-1. Lionel Messi was able to score a brace, with Pedro Rodriguez, David Villa and Carles Puyol writing their names on the score-sheet as well.
Tito Vilanova currently has each and every player available; except the injured Eric Abidal, who is expected to return to action by the end of December. However, the Frenchman will be rarely missed, especially with Barcelona signing two defensive players, Jordi Alba and Alex Song. With all his favourite players available at hand, Tito Vilanova is going to field a 4-3-3 formation with the following line-up:Victor Valdes; Daniel Alves, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba; Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta; David Villa, Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez.Team News: Real MadridDespite winning most of their pre-season friendly games, except the 5-2 loss against Benfica, Madrid were expected to start their La Liga campaign with a bang. However, the Spanish champions faced a stern test in the shape of Valencia, who were able to keep Madrid at bay and managed to draw the game 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.Jose Mourinho is going to try to boost the morale with a win against Barcelona, but it will definitely not come easy for the Portuguese mentor.
Currently, Mourinho has almost all the players available for him. Ricardo Carvalho is back in training, but he is still not expected to start, since Madrid are planning to sell him during the transfer window.Since Marcelo just returned back from the Olympics, he will not be starting the fixture, and Pepe is also out injured. Therefore, Mourinho is going to start the fixture with the following line-up:Iker Casillas; Alvaro Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos, Raul Albiol, Fabio Coentrao; Sami Khedira, Xabi Alonso; Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil, Angel Di Maria; Gonzalo Higuain.

The WWE's biggest event of the summer will take place on Sunday, August 19. The SummerSlam pay-per-view will feature five WWE title bouts and an epic rivalry match. I'm predicting several title changes and a major push for one wrestler after a huge WWE SummerSlam win.
This WWE title bout is the pre-show for SummerSlam. U.S. Champion Santino Marella has been unimpressive in recent weeks. His comedy act is also wearing thin. Antonio Cesaro will begin a championship run at SummerSlam.
Prediction: Antonio Cesaro defeats Santino Marella
WWE Tag Team Championship: Kofi Kingston and R-Truth vs. The Prime Time Players
This is one of the most intriguing matches of SummerSlam. I can't wait to see if Vince McMahon punishes The Prime Time Players in the wake of A.W. getting fired. I predict The Prime Time Players will win the WWE tag team belts.
Prediction: The Prime Time Players defeat Kofi Kingston and R-Truth
Intercontinental Championship: The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio
After being out of action for a while in the WWE, The Miz and Rey Mysterio should do well for the rest of 2012. However, since he only recently became champion, don't look for The Miz to lose his title so quickly at SummerSlam.
Prediction: The Miz defeats Rey Mysterio
Kane vs. Daniel Bryan
When Daniel Bryan joined the WWE, I knew he could wrestle. But I had no idea he could work the fans so well. He is like a master craftsman in every aspect of wrestling. I predict Bryan will pick up a big win over Kane at SummerSlam.
Prediction: Daniel Bryan defeats Kane
Chris Jericho vs. Dolph Ziggler
For WWE fans who are more interested in wrestling than entertainment, this SummerSlam match should steal the show. Before he gets back to work with Fozzy, Jericho will put over Ziggler in a WWE instant classic.
Prediction: Dolph Ziggler defeats Chris Jericho
WWE Championship: CM Punk vs. John Cena vs. Big Show
CM Punk is my favorite active WWE wrestler and I love his heel turn. But his change in attitude will likely end his title reign at SummerSlam. I predict Cena will become WWE Champion to set up storylines through Wrestlemania.
Prediction: John Cena defeats CM Punk and Big Show
World Heavyweight Championship: Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio
Although Sheamus is "injured," I predict he will defeat Del Rio at SummerSlam. However, an angry ADR will pummel Sheamus after the match. Then Dolph Ziggler will cash in his briefcase and become World Heavyweight Champion.
Prediction: Sheamus defeats Alberto Del Rio, then Dolph Ziggler defeats Sheamus
Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar
Triple H took one for the team at Wrestlemania and he will do so again at SummerSlam. After months of horrible WWE booking, Brock Lesnar will finally get his push. This SummerSlam match will be an epic act of destruction.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini will run the rule over Jack Rodwell in training before deciding the extent of the midfielder's potential involvement in the Barclays Premier League opener against Southampton at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Rodwell, troubled by hamstring problems in recent times, could make his City debut in the clash with the Saints, a week on from the confirmation of his move from Everton.
Mancini will also assess the fitness of goalkeeper Joe Hart, who could return after missing the 3-2 Community Shield victory over Chelsea due to a back complaint, while defender Micah Richards (ankle) and midfielder Gareth Barry (abdominal problem) are definitely ruled out.
Provisional squad: Hart, Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Kompany, K Toure, Lescott, Savic, Clichy, Kolarov, Milner, De Jong, Johnson, Nasri, Y Toure, Silva, Dzeko, Aguero, Tevez, Balotelli, Rodwell.
**
Jack Cork is Southampton's only injury concern heading into Sunday's tough Premier League opener at champions Manchester City.
The 23-year-old, who represented Great Britain at the Olympics, is out for the next few weeks after picking up an ankle knock in the pre-season friendly at Bristol City.
Danny Fox and Steven Davis returned safely from midweek international duty and should be included in the squad, although manager Nigel Adkins kept quiet on whether Tadanari Lee would be included after a foot injury.
Provisional squad: Davis, Gazzaniga, Richardson, Butterfield, Clyne, Fox, Shaw, Hooiveld, Fonte, Seaborne, Stephens, Chambers, Ward-Prowse, Do Prado, Cork, Chaplow, De Ridder, Lallana, Schneiderlin, Puncheon, Hammond, Davis, Lambert, Lee, Rodriguez, Sharp

It's August, meaning all 32 NFL training camps are in full swing.
- an they get healthy by Week 1? At least a half-dozen starters will
miss Monday night's preseason opener at the Oakland Raiders. Maybe not
a huge concern ... until you consider Dallas kicks off the regular
season in three weeks and two days against the defending Super Bowl
champion New York Giants, who swept the Cowboys on the way to the NFC
East crown last year. WR Miles Austin (hamstring), rookie CB Morris Claiborne (knee) and CB Mike Jenkins
(shoulder) have the most high-profile injuries. But a reconfigured
offensive line is also a major issue, especially up the middle where it
seems every guard and center is already banged up.
- Will WR Dez Bryant remain on the straight and narrow? He appeared to be making headway before a domestic incident with his mother last month. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was clearly upset with Bryant at the start of camp, but the 23-year-old's performance this summer has also drawn rave reviews. With Austin hurting and former No. 3 WR Laurent Robinson now in a Jaguars uniform, Dallas can hardly afford for Bryant's off-field behavior to remove him from the on-field equation.
- Though plenty of focus is on Head Coach Jason Garrett, QB Tony Romo and what may be the team's closing window of opportunity to win a Super Bowl -- at least with this cast of core players -- keep a close eye on Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan's defense. It played to mixed reviews in 2011 amid Ryan's efforts to install it post-lockout. It's expected to be more dominant in 2012 -- though that assumes Claiborne is ready, free-agent acquisition CB Brandon Carr steps in seamlessly, and OLB DeMarcus Ware gets more help pressuring and defending enemy quarterbacks.

Two of the best 155-pounders on the planet will rematch and the UFC lightweight title is on the line tomorrow night (August 11, 2012) as UFC champion Ben Henderson takes on former UFC champion Frankie Edgar in the main event of UFC 150 in Denver, Colorado.
Ben Henderson was an afterthought when he entered the UFC after losing his WEC title, but three straight big wins in a row, including two against top title contenders earned him his shot at the championship belt. He made the most of it, defeating Edgar and claiming the divisional crown as his own. Now he's looking to defend for the first time..
Frankie Edgar put on some of the best displays of heart in UFC history last year in both of his "Fight of the Year" candidates against Gray Maynard. He may have lost the title against "Bendo" in Japan, but it was a very close bout that could have gone either way. He's hoping for redemption tomorrow night.
Will Edgar have "The Answer" for Henderson's grueling pressure-based attack? Can Henderson slow down Edgar's speed and footwork long enough to land his own attack? How does each elite lightweight secure a victory on Saturday night?
Let's find out:
Star-divide
Ben Henderson
Record: 16-2 overall, 4-0 in the UFC
Key Wins: Frankie Edgar (UFC 144), Jim Miller (UFC on Versus 5), Donald Cerrone 2x (WEC 48, WEC 43)
Key Losses: Anthony Pettis (WEC 53)
How he got here: Ben Henderson was a two-time All-American at Division II Dana College while earning a double degree in criminal justice and sociology. Instead of pursuing a career with his degree, he tried out amateur cagefighting, compiling a 2-1 record and loving the sport enough to make it his job. It didn't take him long to be noticed. Henderson was fighting for Mark Pavelich's MFC within 18 months and earned an invite to the WEC just over two years into his professional career.
He was thrown into the fire immediately, earning stoppage victories over Anthony Njokuani and Shane Roller which earned him an interim WEC lightweight title shot against Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone at WEC 43.
Henderson was still green at the time, but he gutted through a multitude of submission attempts from the former bullrider, using his wrestling to outscore him positionally in what was voted Sherdog's 2009 "Fight of the Year." With the victory, he became the interim WEC lightweight champion.
He unified the titles by defeating incumbent champion, Jamie Varner with a third round guillotine choke and would once again have to face Cerrone for the title at WEC 48, the first and only pay-per-view the promotion ever attempted. In what was expected to be a repeat of their first epic war, the "Smooth" one, choked out Cerrone in less than two minutes to defend his belt.
Henderson would fight one last time for the WEC against the upstart Anthony Pettis. We all know how that played out, with the kick heard 'round the world. What some may forget, was the fight was incredibly close, entirely up for grabs until the final minute of round five.
In his UFC debut, Henderson put on a strong showing against submission specialist Mark Bocek and he followed it up with the most impressive victory of his career, a three round domination of then-number one contender Jim Miller at UFC on Versus 5. With the victory over Miller, he earned a match against Clay Guida and put on a show en route to another dominant and very exciting decision victory to earn his crack at the championship.
He made the most of his shot, earning a unanimous decision over Edgar to dethrone the champ and now he's looking to defend.
How he gets it done: Henderson simply needs to utilize what worked in the last fight but to more extremes. He used terrific pressure against Edgar, so he should put even more pressure on the former champ.
He threw lots of kicks? He should throw them more often and with more force. Edgar may have caught them repeatedly, but he couldn't do much with them and most of the time he was catching the kicks on the rebound after they had landed with a solid "thud."
If Henderson can initiate a clinch, I can see him really working Edgar over as "The Answer" will have no escape from the champion's strength on the inside.
One key thing to avoid for Henderson is being overaggressive. He tends to leave openings for takedowns and big punches if he's being too offensive-minded. Edgar did rock him standing and take him down in the last bout so he'll have to have that in the back of his head.
Frankie Edgar
Record: 14-2-1 overall, 9-2-1 in the UFC
Key Wins: Gray Maynard (UFC 136), B.J. Penn 2x (UFC 113, UFC 118), Jim Miller (Reality Fighting 14)
Key Losses: Ben Henderson (UFC 144), Gray Maynard (UFC Fight Night 13)
How he got here: Frankie Edgar has been a perennial underdog. He never won a state championship, falling just short twice and did the same thing at Clarion University in Pennsylvania. He made the transition to fighting professionally in late 2005 and in just the sixth fight of his career, he was already making his debut in the UFC.
He competed as a lightweight because the UFC didn't have a featherweight division yet and won his first three fights impressively against top competition like Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek and Spencer Fisher. His momentum was halted by the bigger, stronger Gray Maynard in April 2008, but that loss only fueled him to improve.
Just one year later, Edgar put on the best performance of his career against former lightweight champion Sean Sherk, outstriking his bulkier foe and stuffing the elite wrestler's takedowns. After an impressive stoppage of the then-undefeated Matt Veach, Edgar was handed a title shot because Gray Maynard hadn't defeated Nate Diaz decisively enough.
Edgar made the most of his opportunity, utilizing his speed and conditioning to outpoint the plodding B.J. Penn at UFC 113 in Abu Dhabi to shock the world and win the UFC lightweight title. He proved his victory wasn't a fluke by dominating Penn in the rematch at UFC 118, blasting the ex-champ with more powerful strikes, adding kicks and even takedowns to his arsenal.
His next defense was against Gray Maynard at UFC 125 last year and after surviving a horrible first round in which he was dropped four times, Edgar bounced back in Rocky-esque fashion to win three of the remaining four rounds and force a draw. He squared off with Maynard once more last year and this time, he took care of business after a rough first round to score a fourth round knockout victory.
Edgar finally lost his title in a very close decision to Henderson earlier this year, but he was very vocal about receiving a rematch and his efforts paid dividends as he'll be vying to get his belt back tomorrow night..
How he gets it done: Edgar's key to victory is his speed. He's got terrific footwork and tight, technical boxing. He's fast enough to dive into the pocket, land punches and exit at angles to get out of the way of his opponent's attack. He can definitely outpoint Henderson in the striking department if he's on his game.
What Edgar has to avoid is a defensive lapse early in the fight as he has tended to be a slow starter. They key for him is to find a rhythm in his stand-up and get comfortable out there as quick as possible. Once that happens, he's nearly impossible to stop.
A big change Edgar could implement for this fight is to utilize more takedowns in his offensive attack. He was able to put Henderson on the canvas at will in the last fight, at least four or five times if my memory serves me right, but he didn't stick with it. He let Henderson off the hook repeatedly. This time, he should be confident enough to enter "Bendo's" guard and test himself there. He's got the wrestling and the submission defense to avoid whatever Henderson throws at him if he can put the new champ on his back.
Fight X-Factor: The biggest factor for this fight has to be adjustments. Both Edgar and Henderson have shown that they make excellent adjustments for rematches. Edgar stepped up and dominated B.J. Penn the second time around and he finished Gray Maynard in their third fight. Henderson, on the other hand, finished Donald Cerrone in the first round after having a grueling five round war against him in their first fight.
Both men have shown they can make solid adjustments, now it'll be incredibly intriguing to see what adjustments they can make for each other and who made the best shifts in strategy.
Bottom Line: This is such an intriguing stylistic match-up. It's all about speed versus strength and size. Both men are masters of their craft and watching them try to impose their will against each other for potentially up to five rounds again is going to be a real treat. Both men put on a fantastic display on one of 2012's best fights of the year when they faced each other the last time. There's no doubt that this fight should be solid as well.
