Both are great teams, but Spaniards are a better side on any given day. Many wonder if Spain vs Portugal Euro 2012 results will go on expected lines. (video highlights)
Will Portugal be able to contain the tornado called Spain? It is the top team in the Euro 2012 and they along with Germany are expected to lift the tournament. Spain has the most experienced team made of the top players of Real Madrid and Barcelona and on paper they should beat Germany easily.
While Portugal has just a single star in the form of Cristino Ronaldo, the Spanish team possesses a number of top players who can win a match on their individual strengths. But their team seems to have disappointed their fans in Euro 2012. They haven’t played an attacking game that they should have played with so much of star power. Instead they have been slow and have avoided taking risks. If they play the same passive game, they may not avoid being upended by their opponents who have improved their performance in every game.
There are some players in the Spanish team who can change the game with their style and techniques. They are consummate finishers who can possess the ball for as long as they want and put it where they want to. A reviewer while talking about Andrés Iniesta says, “Andrés Iniesta is one such player who seems to have been very effective throughout the tournament… He is 5 feet 7 inches, humble, pale and balding at 28, but Iniesta’s natural reticence is balanced by a chimney sweep’s comfort in tight spaces.”.
A blogger while writing about him says, “Iniesta is not given credit for his performances. As a Barcelona fan and I’m saying this on behalf of all other Barcelona fans, we all know what Iniesta is worth and we can’t imagine this Barcelona squad without him. What I’m trying to put across is that Iniesta’s performances on a larger scale, because he does not get enough credit. He may not be a top scorer or even a top assist provider but if you are observant you will know that he has a huge hand in many of the goals or plays this team sets up. When I say he is slightly overshadowed, I mean all of his performances are bright only for a particular match or a few matches. Think about it, the only thing fresh in most of the people’s minds about him is his World Cup scoring goal and his tribute to his friend Daniel Jarque (which was fantastic)”.
There are several players in Spanish side who can change the whole game on their individual strengths. These players include Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres. Fernando Torres who was under attack for his lackluster game against France had tendered his apology to his fans and countrymen has said that he will improve the game in today’s game if given an opportunity by his team management.
Meanwhile the Spanish side has been criticized for its boring, though controlled game throughout the tournament. A report in Foxsports says, “It is a fair knock if you care about aesthetics in this sport; if you do not and only care about results, then it is hard to argue with winning. Unfortunately, beauty always has been a factor in the game of soccer — it is often reviewed on the European continent with the same attention to style as is given a gallery showing or a dance recital — and Spain’s slogging tactics are not making the grade”. We will have to wait to see if Spain plays an aggressive game and stops this criticism against its game plan or again plays a pure tactical and lackluster game.
